Suspect at large after 2 active shooter incidents in Maine, US

Authorities in Maine are investigating two active shooter events and a suspect remains at large, the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office said in a post on Facebook.

"We are encouraging all businesses to lock down and or close while we investigate," the sheriff's office said.

Maine State Police also said they are responding to an active shooter situation in Lewiston in a post on Facebook.

"Please stay inside your home with the doors locked," state police said. "If you see any suspicious activity or individuals please call 911."

Lewiston is about 36 miles north of Portland.

What we know so far:

  • As many as 22 people may be dead, and 50-60 injured, according to reports.
  • Police are investigating at least two active shooter events in Lewiston, Maine.
  • The Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office has asked for the public's help to identify the suspected shooter, releasing two images on its Facebook page.
  • The shooter remains at large.
  • A local hospital and medical centre, Central Maine Medical, has confirmed they are reacting to a "mass casualty shooting event".
  • Local police are advising businesses to close and people to stay indoors and lock their doors.
  • A US official in Washington said President Joe Biden had been briefed on the incident.
