Mahesh Bindra has been unanimously elected as the Chairperson of Corrections Association of New Zealand (CANZ) for South Auckland Prison. CANZ is the biggest Union of Prison Officers in New Zealand and works to protect the rights and working conditions of Department of Corrections staff including Prison Officers, Probation Officers and Support Staff. While Maori are over- represented in the prison population, the Officers managing them come from a wide range of ethnicities.
The tenure is for one year and there are chances that he might be nominated to the National Executive Committee of CANZ in the near future.
