Todd McClay, New Zealand's recently appointed trade minister, has wrapped up his one-day visit to India, marking his inaugural overseas trip in the new role. The visit, which took place on December 18-19, is in line with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon's commitment to strengthening diplomatic and trade relations with India.

A significant highlight of McClay's visit was his meeting with India's Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, held on December 19 in New Delhi. McClay, speaking to The Indian Weekender, described the visit as "great" and emphasised the positive atmosphere surrounding discussions on how to enhance the bilateral relationship between the two nations.

"I particularly appreciated the time that I spent with Minister Goyal. There is a lot of positivity and enthusiasm in India about how we can build the relationship," said McClay.

The dialogue between the two ministers signifies a concerted effort to bolster trade relations between New Zealand and India. Currently, India stands as New Zealand's 11th largest trading partner, and both ministers underscored the importance of trade facilitation during their discussions.

According to a statement from the Indian ministry, the ministers delved into measures to streamline trade processes, reduce barriers, and create a more conducive environment for businesses and investors from both nations. Recognising the need for increased engagement, they advocated for a collaborative approach involving officials from relevant departments and the private sector to fortify the trade and economic relationship.

McClay expressed his optimism about future collaborations, stating, "We [Piyush Goyal and ]) have agreed to meet again in the new year." This commitment indicates a sustained effort to nurture and expand the ties between the two countries, setting a positive tone for further cooperation in 2024.

As both nations look towards a new year, the dialogue initiated during McClay's visit lays the groundwork for a strengthened partnership, fostering economic growth and collaboration on the international stage.
