In a burst of vibrant colours and rhythmic beats, Queen Street in Auckland transformed into a spectacle of spiritual revelry on December 16. The occasion was the Sri Jagannath Rath Yatra organised by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).

Organisers say with a gathering of more than 10,000 people, it wasn't just an event but a collective venture into unity, compassion and sheer joy.

The main attraction, of course, was the grand chariot procession featuring the divine trio - Lord Jagannatha, Baladeva, and Subhadra. Bedecked with intricate embellishments, as the glorious chariot meandered through the vibrant streets, the air was filled with the rhythm of traditional beats and chants of ‘Hare Krishna’.

Decked in traditional attire, devotees added vibrant hues to the spectacle. One devotee, Radhika Sharma, said, "The Rath Yatra is not just a procession; it's a spiritual journey that unites us all. The energy here is incredible, and the sight of Lord Jagannatha's chariot moving through the city is truly uplifting."

Sharing the same sentiment, another devotee, Gopal Das, emphasised, "This event is a testament to the fact that our unity is found in shared devotion, transcending the superficial distinctions of the world.

“The event encouraged attendees to pause, reflect, and revel in the profound joy of genuine human connection."

When asked about the event's highlights, organisers joyfully pointed to the melting pot of cultures and the infectious expressions of devotion.

Talking to The Indian Weekender, one of the organisers said, “We are overwhelmed by the great outpour of community support. For the Kiwi-Indian community, these events serve as a lifeline to their cultural roots, a respite from the chaos of the modern world.

“In the fast-paced world of technology where people forget real happiness due to disease, natural disaster, family problems, and financial issues, ISKCON, aka Hare Krishna, brings their ancient culture that reminds us that love for everyone and simplicity can break any barrier of ethnicity and unite us all together.”
