India’s high commissioner to New Zealand says the bilateral partnership between the two countries is on an “upward trajectory”.

Neeta Bhushan met Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters, also the Foreign Minister, on Monday and underscored the uptick in relations between Wellington and New Delhi.

“I paid a courtesy call on Rt. Hon. Winston Peters…the visit of Trade Minister Todd McClay to India on 18-19 December

clearly highlighted the commitment of both sides to enhance our partnership in

trade and business.

“We also agreed that education links between our two countries are very important. The Indian diaspora in New Zealand also play a

crucial and vital role in strengthening people to people ties,” she told The Indian Weekender.

McClay left for New Delhi on December 18, his first overseas visit since becoming the trade minister. The trip comes in the backdrop of Christopher Luxon emphasising his intent to shore up diplomatic and trade ties with India ever since he became the prime minister.

In India, the trade minister is scheduled to meet counterpart Piyush Goyal and speak at a series of business gatherings.

Before leaving for New Delhi, McClay told The Indian Weekender, ‘I’m speaking to a large group from the Indian education sector to discuss opportunities for students to study in NZ.

I’m giving a speech to a large group of directors from small and medium-sized Indian businesses about export opportunities with NZ.”
