Preserving culture beyond borders: New Zealand Telugu Association

In the heart of Auckland, New Zealand Telugu Association (NZTA) stands as a beacon of cultural preservation, community service, and unwavering commitment to the Telugu-speaking population in New Zealand. The organisation has been honoured with the prestigious Community Organisation of the Year Award at Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame 2023.

The NZTA is commemorating its silver jubilee, marking 25 years of cultural richness and community engagement. Since its inception in 1998, the NZTA has been a cultural anchor for the nearly 25,000 Telugu people in New Zealand. The primary goal was to unite the Telugu diaspora, providing a platform to celebrate native traditions, promote the Telugu language, and foster a sense of togetherness.

Suneel Kuncha, the President of NZTA, says, "This award means a lot to me as I humbly dedicate this award to all the past presidents and the executive members right from the inception of New Zealand Telugu Association in 1998," Kuncha says with gratitude.

"Without their dedication, hard work, and valuable time, our association would not have reached this stage. Thank you, The Indian Weekender, for recognising the same. This award inspires us to be more responsible and proactive, helping our community and the wider communities."

According to Kuncha, NZTA has evolved into a vibrant community of more than 1,500 active members participating enthusiastically in various programmes and events.

"The main idea behind forming NZTA is to bring Telugu people in NZ together to rejoice in native traditions and promote Telugu language and culture," states Kuncha, encapsulating the association's founding principles.

"We strive to inspire the younger generation to learn and practice Telugu traditions and exchange programmes for students and professionals within the Telugu community and aim to work in the wider domain."

The core mission of NZTA goes beyond cultural festivities. It is deeply rooted in community service and humanitarian efforts. The association organises health camps, supports local charities, and actively engages in social activities to strengthen the bond between the Telugu community and the broader New Zealand society.

NZTA's educational initiatives are instrumental in ensuring the transmission of Telugu traditions to the younger generation. Language classes, cultural programmes, and exchange initiatives contribute to a holistic approach, keeping the cultural flame alive in a foreign land. Kuncha emphasises the importance of inspiring the youth to connect with their roots and engage in local humanitarian service, fostering cultural awareness and a sense of responsibility towards the broader community.

Over the years, NZTA has been a dynamic force in organising various events, from sporting competitions and art exhibitions to religious celebrations and blood donation camps.

As the NZTA reflects on 25 years of achievements, it stands as a testament to the power of cultural organisations in preserving heritage, fostering community spirit, and contributing to the rich cultural mosaic of New Zealand.
