Anuradha Ramkumar stands as a luminary in the realm of Indian classical dance, an ambassador preserving the rich heritage of Bharatha Natyam and Kuchipudi in Auckland for over two-and-a-half decades.

Since establishing the Nrityabhinaya Anuradha’s School of Indian Dances in 1996, she has meticulously woven threads of cultural connectivity, providing a vital link for New Zealand Indians to their roots through the medium of dance.

She is the winner of this year's Kiwi Indian Cultural Excellence Award at the Hall Of Fame 2023 Awards. "Receiving the Indian Hall of Fame Cultural Excellence Award in New Zealand holds profound significance to me,” says Anuradha.

“This recognition honours my dedication and celebrates the rich heritage of Indian dance and culture that I've passionately endeavoured to preserve and promote through the Anuradha School of Indian Dances."

Anuradha's ‘arangetrams’ serve as rites of passage, nurturing and guiding numerous students annually as they immerse themselves in the intricacies of these classical dance forms. Her students, a testament to her teachings, grace various community events and the annual dance productions, showcasing their skill and the depth of cultural preservation.

"This award serves as a beacon of inspiration for me and all aspiring artists and cultural enthusiasts. It symbolises the value of perseverance, commitment, and the power of artistic expression in transcending boundaries," says Anuradha.

Beyond preserving Indian classical dance, Anuradha has ingeniously interwoven Ma¯ori elements, recognising and honouring the connections between Indian and Ma¯ori cultures. Her productions, depicting Indian mythologies or addressing social themes, are vibrant tapestries woven with threads of cultural fusion and artistic brilliance.

"My journey in New Zealand has been a vibrant blend of cultural exchange and artistic exploration. I’ve been fortunate to witness the enthusiasm of Kiwis towards embracing different cultural traditions," says Anuradha.

An academician and a full-time intermediate school teacher for over two decades, Anuradha has directed captivating productions reflecting Indian traditions and societal narratives. Her dedication to education and artistry serves as an inspiration to her students and the community at large.

"My plans revolve around expanding the horizons of Indian classical dances,” she says.

As she gazes toward the future, Anuradha envisions broader horizons for Indian classical dance in New Zealand. Her aspirations extend to creating more immersive cultural experiences, fostering collaborations with local artists, and integrating Indian art forms even deeper into the vibrant cultural fabric of the country.

"I aim to establish platforms that encourage dialogue, understanding, and appreciation for the rich heritage of Indian dances while continuing to inspire and educate future generations."

Anuradha Ramkumar, a beacon of cultural preservation, education, and artistic excellence, continues to bridge cultures and inspire a deeper appreciation for the arts, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of New Zealand.
