Kite Festival returns to Auckland: Everything you need to know

An upcoming event in Auckland promises to lift spirits higher than a kite.

Vaishnav Parivar (NZ) Inc. is gearing up for the much-anticipated Indian Kite Festival at Eastdale Reserve, Avondale on January 13, 2024, from 11am to 6pm.

The festival battleground, next to Avondale College on Rosebank Road, will play host to a riot of colors, strings, and undoubtedly some aerodynamic squirrel acrobatics.

Kites, prepped and ready for takeoff, along with manja (thread), will be up for grabs for all aspiring sky dancers. If that's not enough to tickle your taste buds, fear not–the festival promises a gastronomic adventure with food stalls offering delectable delights, including the exotic kulfi and mouth-freshening paan.

Children are in for a treat with a carnival of entertainment, featuring fun rides, slides, face painting, and drawing competitions. Live cultural programmes and garba will also grace the stage, adding a dash of spice to the festivities.

For those feeling lucky, a $5 raffle ticket could catapult you into a beachy paradise with a chance to win a Gold Coast Holiday Package for two, complete with a cozy three-day accommodation.

This is not just an event; it's a free-for-all family fiesta that promises an entire day of laughter, colors, and kite-induced euphoria. The last kite festival in January 2021 left over 8,000 people on cloud nine, and all the kites were snatched up by 4pm, leaving a few dreamers kite-less. Arrive early, dodge disappointment, and soak in the full day of entertainment and kite-flying prowess.

In addition to the usual street parking frenzy, Avondale College is rolling out the red carpet with additional free parking on a first-come, first-served basis. Convenient access from the car park to the grounds is ensured through the pedestrian gates.
