Done deal: New government coming next week

New Zealand will have a new government next week. After an extended 40-day period following polling day, National, ACT, and NZ First have finally reached a deal, set to be officially signed and disclosed at Parliament today.

Prime Minister-elect Christopher Luxon remains tight-lipped about the details of the agreement. The accord's specifics, including the crucial role of deputy prime minister, are yet to be revealed.

Luxon, exuding confidence, contacted Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro to convey his imminent announcement and was poised to update her following the approval of the deal by the respective party boards. Public confirmation from the involved parties will affirm Luxon's ability to establish the new government.

Luxon is eager to expedite the process, expressing his desire for a ministerial swearing-in ceremony by coming Monday. Preparations for the state opening of Parliament, conducted yesterday, set the stage for Luxon's goal of having Parliament operational by December 5. This timeline allows for three weeks of legislative activity before the holiday recess.

ACT leader David Seymour shared insights into the upcoming government's plans, disclosing a 100-day agenda will be unveiled shortly after the coalition deal announcement. Seymour hinted at potential legislative repeals, suggesting urgency might be required to eliminate outdated laws in order to curb unnecessary expenses.

The new government appears poised to make swift and impactful changes, setting the stage for a dynamic political landscape in New Zealand.
