Fun and learn at BAPS Swaminarayan kids carnival

BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Auckland lit up with joy as it hosted its much-awaited annual Kids Diwali Carnival, drawing a spirited crowd of about 1,400 people.

The theme for this year, ‘Discover the Light Within’, set the stage for a dazzling display of festivities. At the heart of the November 18 carnival were its young volunteers, a dynamic group mainly comprising high school and university students who poured their energy and creativity into orchestrating a joyful celebration.

The carnival boasted of a myriad of attractions, turning the temple grounds into a festive wonderland. From classic rides like the Ferris wheel and spinning teacups to the whimsical charm of a merry-go-round, there was something for everyone. A special set-up using drapes and sound effects, named Animal Maze, stole the spotlight with its vibrant decorations, captivating visitors at every turn.

Adding depth to the experience were enlightening exhibitions. One traced the journey of Nilkanth Varni, the teenage form of Lord Swaminarayan, while another addressed contemporary concerns, offering insights into family bonding and strategies for managing screen time.

The festivities seamlessly blended Hindu tales of bravery, like the stories of Jatayu and Gajendra, with engaging activities such as ring toss, angry bird, buzz wire, and hoop throw. A captivating stage performance encouraged attendees to ‘Discover The Light Within’ by nurturing aspects of education, spirituality and health.

To complement the cultural immersion, the Shayona food stall served up a delectable array of culinary delights. From Mexican bhel to manchurian and pizza to falooda, diverse flavours were on offer.

Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of more than 80 volunteers, deeply involved in community service, ensured the event ran like clockwork. These volunteers, who regularly devote their Sundays to educating young children about Hindu culture at the temple's Bal Sabhas, go beyond the textbooks, instilling moral values and fostering a comprehensive understanding of heritage and ethics.
