The picturesque North Island town of Feilding transformed into a hub of dazzling lights, vibrant culture, and boundless diversity during its inaugural Diwali celebrations.

More than 2,800 attendees flocked to Feilding Civic Centre on the evening of November 4, and what they witnessed left them mesmerised.

Organised by Bhartiya Samaj Wellington-Manawatu Charitable Trust and Rotary Club of Feilding Oroua, it was an unexpected cultural explosion in a town with a relatively small Indian population, and Fielding’s first Diwali gala didn't disappoint. Joy and excitement filled the air as residents and visitors revelled in a cultural spectacle they never expected.

Notable dignitaries, including Manawatu District Council Mayor Helen Worboys and Ministry for Ethnic Communities' Deputy Chief Executive, Strategic Engagement and Partnerships, Arthur Chin, graced the event.

Andrea McKenzie, a delighted Feilding resident, exclaimed, "It is one of the best multicultural shows I have ever seen in Feilding. A spectacular success. It has truly added more colours to this beautiful town."

But it wasn't just the adults who were thrilled by the Diwali festivities. Eleven-year-old Vrinda, another Feilding resident, showcased her talents by performing a traditional dance from the western Indian state of Gujarat. With infectious enthusiasm, she declared, "I can't wait for it to happen next year. Thank you for a platform to show my culture to my Kiwi friends."

The stage was ablaze with performances transcending age, gender, and cultural backgrounds. Maori, Indian, Scottish, Latin American, and Japanese performers brought their unique talents to the forefront, delivering electrifying performances that left the audience spellbound.

A group of boys from Hato Paora College and Catholic Maori Boys Boarding School took to the stage, bringing traditional Waiata and Haka performances to life.

Mayor Helen Worboys couldn't help but be amazed by the community's enthusiastic response. "The fantastic response from our community was overwhelming," she said. "The level of varied entertainment items was amazing and of a high standard. A great way to celebrate together!"

William Leipnik, Co-President of Rotary Club of Feilding Oroua, said he couldn't be happier with the event's outcome. "Our first Diwali is just the starting point! I feel this was a magnificent way to show the excitement and potential for working together with all the cultures in our community."

The Diwali festivities weren't just about entertainment. Food stalls offered a delightful array of cuisines, while art exhibits featured Henna and face painting for children. The grand finale was a breathtaking laser show outside Feilding Civic Centre, adding to the magic of the evening.

As attendees left the event, they carried not only joy and cherished memories but also a ‘diya’ as a token of blessing.

The Bhartiya Samaj Wellington-Manawatu Charitable Trust is a chapter of Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust  (which has been serving the community since 1995). Jeet Suchdev, the trust's Chairperson, shared their mission of bringing light into people's lives daily and empowering Aotearoa's diverse communities.

On a parting note, Rishi Sharma, President of Bhartiya Samaj Wellington-Manawatu Charitable Trust, said, “We are still in awe of the overwhelming response and incredible support we received at the first-ever Diwali in Feilding. As we reflect on the spirit of Diwali, we want to make a special request to everyone.

“Let us carry the light of Diwali forward and be a beacon of hope and kindness in someone's life. Whether through acts of compassion, spreading love and joy, or extending a helping hand to those in need, let us collectively illuminate the lives of others."
