Auckland's Tamil community celebrates Diwali in style

The Auckland Tamil Association (ATA) turned Freemans Bay Community Centre into a vibrant hub of cultural celebration as they hosted an electrifying Diwali extravaganza.

With about 400 attendees, the ‘Deepavali 2023’ event on November 4 exceeded expectations, making it a night to remember.

Dignitaries who graced the occasion included Honorary Consul of India in Auckland Bhav Dhillon, National MP Melissa Lee, ex-parliamentarian Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi and presidents of various Indian community associations.

The evening's spotlight was a special ceremony honouring esteemed community leaders Ray Annamalai and Nathan Saminathan, who have dedicated themselves to the welfare of the community. Their selfless service, putting the needs of the people first, was acknowledged and celebrated amidst cheers and applause.

Melissa Lee said, "What a delightful evening! Recognising community leaders like Mr Ray Annamalai and Mr Nathan Saminathan was a momentous occasion. Thanks to ATA President Vai Ravindran and the team for curating a night to remember."

The night sky erupted with a kaleidoscope of colours during a dazzling fireworks display, where guests enthusiastically joined in, lighting up the atmosphere in celebration of Diwali. The night sky lit up, echoing the jubilant atmosphere below.

The little ones weren't forgotten either. A designated children's entertainment area provided endless fun with a captivating bubble show and games. Children's laughter filled the air, and their wide-eyed wonder added a unique charm to the evening. Parents could relax, socialise, and network, knowing their children were in safe hands and having a blast.

Vai Ravindran, ATA President, said, "This event was truly amazing and left a lasting impact on all who attended. We were overwhelmed by the positive response, and we are delighted that so many people enthusiastically joined us.

“Our primary goal is to unite people and celebrate Diwali, as we do in our home countries with our families. It underscores the importance of preserving and celebrating our culture and traditions, uniting people in a way that will be remembered for a long time."

Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, reflecting on the affair, described it as an intimate yet dynamic celebration, fostering community spirit and a beautiful exchange of cultures.
