Durga Puja in Christchurch: A Glimpse of Kolkata in New Zealand

As the festive season in India fills the air with excitement and anticipation, it also brings a tinge of sadness to the hearts of those who cannot make the journey back to their homeland. Whether it's the high cost of plane tickets, the fear of COVID-19, the unavailability of leave, or the need to prioritise work and family, there are numerous reasons why many find themselves far from home during Durga Puja. That’s why Bangaliana Multicultural Christchurch found a unique way to combat this homesickness by bringing Ma Durga to their new homeland.

In 2021, they imported a magnificent Ma Durga Murti all the way from Kolkata, India, which travelled for 78 days to reach the Garden City. The group hosted with a Durga Puja event on the 20th and 21st of October at the Hornby Hei Hei Community Centre near The Hub Hornby, offering a taste of the grand celebrations seen in Kolkata and Bangladesh.

The festival was meticulously organised, with a grand pandal and hall decorations that rivalled those seen in India. The celebrations kicked off with the Sasthi and Saptami rituals, followed by the traditional Pushpanjali.

The highlight of the festival was the bhog, a sumptuous feast prepared by dedicated volunteers that included Pulao, Aloo Gobi, Pakora, Chana Dal, Papadum, Payesham, Jilapi, and Gulab Jamun. In addition, visitors could enjoy dosa stalls, homemade sweets, henna art, and craft stalls.

The cultural aspect of the festival celebrated the rich diversity of India, with performances such as Bengali poetry recitations, bhangra and traditional Sri Lankan dances, and South Indian dance presentations. The Dekaworwor West African Drum Group had everyone dancing to the rhythmic beats of the dhak, creating an unforgettable experience.

The festival reached its emotional climax as participants reluctantly prepared to send Ma Durga back to her abode. The immersion of Ma Durga involved traditional Dhunuchi dances, a dhak competition, and Sindur Khela. The day concluded with a heartwarming gesture, as bhog was served to all attendees.

Bangaliana Multicultural Christchurch expressed their deep gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of the event, including generous sponsors, hardworking volunteers, and those who worked tirelessly behind the scenes.

The event was successful in creating a sense of home for the Bengali community while spreading the joy and cultural diversity of Durga Puja to the wider community. As participants left the festival, their hearts were filled with warmth and a sense of belonging, carrying the spirit of Durga Puja with them throughout the year.
