What to expect at BNZ Auckland Diwali Festival

Get ready to immerse yourself in a vibrant and culturally rich experience as BNZ Auckland Diwali Festival returns to Aotea Square and Queen Street.

Mark your calendars for the weekend of November 4 and 5, when the heart of Auckland will come alive with the sights, sounds, and flavors of one of the most anticipated festivals in the city.

This year, festival-goers can expect a diverse and exciting lineup of activities and attractions, running from midday until 9pm on both days. The festival boasts of 34 food stalls, 12 retail outlets, five henna artists, and three information booths to cater to a wide range of interests and tastes, say organisers.

From mouthwatering delicacies to traditional merchandise and informational resources, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

One of the exciting new additions to the festival is the introduction of yoga classes and theory-based workshops, led by Reha Kumar, a renowned yoga expert.

These sessions promise to provide festival attendees with an opportunity to unwind and learn more about this ancient practice.

For those seeking exhilarating performances, BNZ Auckland Diwali Festival offers a spectacular lineup of more than 270 performances across the two days.

Notably, Kohinoor Bhangra Academy, who were waitlisted last year due to a late entry, will take centrestage. With their high-energy routines and captivating costumes, they are poised to be a festival highlight.

Hailing from Christchurch, the Bhangra Fitness group is making a special appearance, showcasing the universal appeal of this energetic and infectious dance form.

A significant addition to the festival's programme is the increasing popularity of Kathak dance performances, which have gained momentum following the challenges of the Covid-19 lockdowns. Kathak has a unique cultural significance and has only recently gained prominence in the festival. It is known for its storytelling through movement.

One standout group in this category is Kathakars NZ school of dance, and internationally acclaimed Kathak dancer, Meghranjani Medhi, will grace the festival with her mesmerising performances.

The BNZ Auckland Diwali Festival is more than just an event; it's an opportunity to celebrate the cultural diversity and traditions that make Auckland a unique and dynamic city.

So, don't miss your chance to be a part of this spectacular two-day extravaganza, as Auckland lights up in the spirit of Diwali.
