The 77th Indian Independence Day was commemorated at Indian High Commission in Wellington with much fervour and enthusiasm.

The High Commissioner of India to New Zealand, Neeta Bhushan hoisted the tricolour, after which the national anthem was played.

Diversity, Inclusion and Ethnic Communities Minister  Priyanca Radhakrishnan was among the dignitaries gathered in the high commission auditorium to enjoy a captivating cultural programme. The venue was fully packed with members of Indian and New Zealand communities

The high commissioner commenced the event by reading out the address to the nation given by Indian President Droupadi Murmu on the eve of Independence Day.

In her speech, the President emphasised that Independence Day signifies unity within a vast community of people, transcending individual identities. She highlighted India's role as the world's largest democracy, where every citizen shares equal opportunities, rights, and responsibilities.

President Murmu noted, “What we celebrate on Independence Day is the fact that we are part of a great democracy. Each of us has many identities – apart from caste, creed, language and region, we are also identified with our families and professions – but there is one identity that is above all. That is our identity as citizens of India. Each one of us is an equal citizen; each one of us has an equal opportunity, equal rights and equal duties, in this land.”

The President attributed India's struggle for freedom to Mahatma Gandhi and other visionary leaders who championed the principles of truth and non-violence. These principles, she noted, have inspired political movements worldwide.

The President highlighted India's growing influence on the global stage, its leadership at international forums like the G20, and its commitment to developmental and humanitarian causes.

“Independence Day is an occasion to reconnect with our history. It is also an occasion to assess our present and reflect about our way forward. Looking at the present, we see that India has not only regained its rightful place on the world stage, but it has also enhanced its standing in the international order. During my visits and interactions with the members of the Indian diaspora, I have observed a new confidence in the India story. India is playing a crucial role in promoting developmental and humanitarian goals around the world. It has also assumed leadership of international forums, especially the presidency of G20,” said Murmu.

The high commissioner said, “It was a great privilege to hoist the National flag today as this was my first Independence Day in New Zealand. I thank everyone for their contribution towards deepening India-New Zealand ties and hope that our relations will continue to grow much stronger in the coming days and months".

Minister Radhakrishnan, addressing the audience, extended greetings on behalf of New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins. She emphasised the importance of honouring those who fought for freedom and democracy, and she highlighted the need to build a robust economy and a sustainable future.

Radhakrishnan acknowledged the contributions of the Kiwi-Indian community to New Zealand's economy and expressed support for strengthening the relationship between New Zealand and India.

She acknowledged, “There is so much more work to do to ensure that the voices of our ethnic communities are represented at every level of leadership and decision-making.”

The event concluded with a lively cultural programme of dance and music, encapsulating the spirit of Independence Day celebrations at Indian High Commission in Wellington.
