Driven by her unwavering faith, Christina Lata, a dedicated support worker and graduate of Future Skills Academy, finds inspiration in caring for others.

Having completed her NZ Certificate in Health and Wellbeing Level 2 and Level 3 at Future Skills, Christina now serves as a team lead, in particular a Positive Behaviour Support Worker, at a residential care provider in Palmerston North.

Hailing from a Fijian-Indian background, Christina is a single mother to a 14-year-old daughter and she relocated to New Zealand in 2006. Throughout her journey, she has held diverse roles in customs, education, and retail, along with contributing to her local church.

However, it is her Christian faith that kindles her desire to provide compassionate care to individuals, spurring her to enhance her healthcare skills and contribute to New Zealand's healthcare industry.

Christina embarked on her healthcare journey by enrolling in NZ Certificate in Health and Wellbeing Level 2 at Future Skills Academy. Encouraged by her positive experience, she further pursued a Level 3 certificate and urged her friends to join the programmes as well.

Reflecting on her time at Future Skills, Christina says, “I enjoyed how fun and interactive the classes were. Tutors were amazing during my time and we enjoyed the venue too. It was clean and well-kept. Parking was never an issue and it was fun and educational and professional.”

Upon completion of her Level 3 programme, Christina secured full-time employment as a healthcare assistant. Driven by her ambition to excel, she pursued additional studies in bicultural social services and diversional therapy through other educational providers, striving to become a registered diversional therapist.

This journey led her to work in the diversional therapy department of a private rest home in West Auckland. Christina has now moved to Palmerston North, assuming the role of Team Lead (Positive Behaviour Support Worker) at a residential care provider.

In her current position, she supervises a team of 13 staff members responsible for individuals with challenging behavior, complex care needs, and intellectual disabilities.

Throughout her career, Christina has recognised the tremendous learning and upskilling experiences she has gained, all of which originated from her time at Future Skills.

Her current role encompasses various responsibilities, including managing schedules, safety and support plans, and ensuring the overall well-being of residents. Additionally, Christina conducts coaching sessions for staff members from other residential facilities.

“It’s challenging but worth it always to see the results of giving people the best care and support to live their best lives,” says Christina.
