A heartwarming and inclusive evening celebrating Eid al-Adha, one of the most significant festivals in the Islamic calendar, took place in Henderson recently.

Held at Vajihi Markaz, the event had about 120 people from the Dawoodi Bohra community braving the cold to come together for the joyous occasion.

The event was a vibrant display of unity, cultural exchange, and generosity. It aimed to foster inclusiveness and promote interfaith dialogue.

Minister for Diversity, Inclusion and Ethnic Communities Priyanca Radhakrishnan graced the event as the chief guest, spreading the message of inclusivity and diversity.

Speaking at the July 1 event, Radhakrishnan expressed appreciation for the warm reception and hospitality she received. She reiterated her ongoing interest and support for the Dawoodi Bohra community, emphasising the significance of embracing diversity for a stronger and more united society.

She said, “Such a wholesome, heartwarming evening celebrating Eid al-Adha with the Dawoodi Bohras. I learnt so much about who they are, the values they live by - including the fact that no one should have to go to bed hungry - their focus on education and empowerment for everyone, social welfare and so much more.”

The gathering showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Dawoodi Bohras, their values, and the initiatives they undertake to help those in need. The Dawoodi Bohras, a Muslim community spread over 40 countries, are known for their commitment to education, business, and various professional fields.

Under the guidance of their leader, His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, they uphold their traditions while embracing modernity, fostering an active and peaceful existence, and contributing to the welfare of humanity.

One of the most captivating experiences of the evening was the communal meal, where guests sat on the floor and dined together from a ‘thal’, a large plate symbolising unity and camaraderie.

Minister Radhakrishnan enthusiastically embraced the tradition and said, “I had a wonderful time with this incredibly warm community and even experienced eating a meal the way they do - sitting on the floor and eating from a thal.”

Several dignitaries, including Chris Carter from Henderson-Massey Local Board, and Waitakere Indian Association President Sunil Kushal, were in attendance.

For the Dawoodi Bohra community, this event was not just a celebration of Eid al-Adha but an opportunity to promote inclusivity and understanding among different cultures.

Shabbir Rajkotwala of Auckland Dawoodi Bohras told The Indian Weekender, “The Members of the community were delighted to meet the Minister and able to interact with her and discuss issues with her, and she too became a part of us. Her ongoing interest and support of our community is very greatly appreciated by us all.

“Such events celebrate diversity and build bridges of understanding between different cultural groups. Events like these provide an excellent platform for people to learn about each other's traditions, values, and initiatives, fostering a sense of unity and harmony within the larger community.”
