“May God bless him”: Kiwi-Indians high on nostalgia as Pyarelal performs live in Auckland

Thousands of Aucklanders made their way to Trust Arena in Henderson to attend Laxmikant Pyarelal Live In Concert last week. The show, a first for Pyarelal in New Zealand, attracted many fans from the Kiwi-Indian community eager to see the maestro perform live.

The event's highlight was the 83-year-old legendary music composer conducting on stage for more than three hours, showcasing his musical prowess and experience in the industry.

The event on April 29, 2023, was attended by about 3,300 people, including many Fiji-Indians. The sound was top-notch, and the visuals on the LED screens added to the grandeur of the event.

The concert was a tribute to the iconic Bollywood music produced from the 1960s to the 1990s by the Laxmikant Pyarelal duo, and the gala saw power-packed performances by acclaimed singers like Kavita Krishnamurthi, Amit Kumar and Sudesh Bhosle.

Among the dignitaries at the event were the High Commissioner of India to New Zealand, Neeta Bhushan, and Hon Consul of India in Auckland Bhav Dhillon.

Many in attendance said the music took them back to the golden era of Bollywood music and induced a bout of nostalgia. The Kiwi-Indian community expressed their excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to see the music maestros perform live in Auckland.

One of the attendees, Preeti Sahu, told The Indian Weekender, “I feel blessed to see the master of music Pyarelal ji in action even at this age. The show took me down the memory lane with evergreen golden melodies. It was a wonderful show with some well-known singers. It was a dream come true to witness the magic of Laxmikant Pyarelal on stage. Their music has been a part of our lives, and we are grateful to have experienced it live."

Another audience member Anil Bohra said, “ The show was powerful, remarkable, and grand. The audience witnessed mega entertainment, with Laxmikant ji in our heart, and the presence of living legend Pyarelal ji on the stage. It was great. Thanks to all supporters, organisers and promoters…will be waiting for the next one soon.”

Calling the show brilliant, Ranjana Gauri, another guest, said, "I was dancing the whole time. The songs were lovely. Pyarelal was standing for too long, and I felt sorry for him. May god bless him with good health.”

The show was promoted in Auckland by Swapnil Shah of Pranshi Group and Vinay Mehta and in Australia by Rohit Trivedi from Sahyog Entertainment.

Shah expressed his delight at the turnout and the response from the community. He said, “We have grown up listening to the magical music produced by Laxmikant Pyarelal. Pyarelal is a legendary artist who had never been to New Zealand before, so it was a historical moment for Aucklanders to see him live. We want to keep our culture alive among all age groups.”
