Christchurch’s Anzac Day dawn service returned to Cathedral Square this year for the first time since the 2011 earthquakes.

More than 10,000 people attended the dawn service, which started at 6.30 AM on 25 April.

According to RSA’s Jim Lilley, returning to Cathedral Square is a momentous event. He conducted the service and provided a historical overview of the memorial and services held over the years.

Anzac Day, observed annually on 25 April, commemorates the New Zealanders who lost their lives in war during the Gallipoli campaign and recognises the contributions of current and former servicemen and women.

The campaign saw a significant loss of life, with 2779 New Zealanders among the dead. First observed in 1916, the day has ceremonies held at war memorials in New Zealand and overseas that are modelled on military funerals and are steeped in tradition and ritual.

Colonel (Rtd) Ross Milne of Christchurch Memorial RSA said at the commemoration, “The word ANZAC encompasses Australian and New Zealand forces. Over many years it has come to emphasise the friendship and bravery shared by our two countries and fighting to preserve the principles and freedom that we hold so dear.”

Christchurch mayor Phil Mauger joined representatives of New Zealand’s armed forces in laying wreaths during the service.

Mayor Mauger, in his address, said, “I acknowledge our veterans- retired and serving servicemen and women who gave their lives in order to protect their fellow countrymen…This year is a very special one for us and for the city. After over a decade of holding the Anzac Day dawn service at Cranmer Square, we have come home to Cathedral Square and to this magnificent monument, the Citizen’s War Memorial. This city icon has been returned to its place of prominence as a central city landmark.

“In February this year, the Princess Royal attended the rededication of this memorial, and today we mark its first day as a public memorial. It is indeed a day to remember. As mayor, it is such a privilege and honour to be a witness to this very special commemoration.”

Later at 10 AM, the Transitional Cathedral in Latimer Square also hosted a special service.

The New Zealand Army Band performed at the service.

Anzac Day services are also held in various Christchurch suburbs, including Lyttleton, Akaroa and Papanui.
