Cultural diversity shines at ladies-only event

Hundreds of women made their way to Manukau recently to attend Vaisakhi Mela. The ladies-only event, organised by Woman Care Trust (WCT), saw about 2,400 women having a gala time.

Dressed in their ethnic best, the guests enjoyed an evening of fun, music, food and dance. The event was attended by women from across communities under one roof, promoting cross-cultural connections and benefitting visitors from Auckland and Hamilton.

The colourful and vibrant event at Due Drop Events Centre started with a special Sikh religious prayer for the Vaisakhi festival, followed by spectacular performances showcasing the local talent of children, girls and seniors.

Women were seen capturing beautiful moments at the 360-degree photo booth and making the most of the clothing and jewellery stalls set up at the venue. Regarding the response to the event, Abha Khanna, WCT’s Community Development Officer, said, “WCT is delighted to have another successful sold-out event in its bucket of events. We got many messages and calls from the ladies to say the event was very well organised, full of entertainment, and a platform for showcasing the cultural festival and traditional dance forms. We are overwhelmed with the response and are encouraged to have a bigger and better event next year.”

Rupinder Kaur, a guest, said the event was a huge success, with attendees praising the organisers for creating a welcoming and inclusive environment. "It's so nice to celebrate Vaisakhi with other women. As a woman, I felt more comfortable attending events where no men were present. It allowed me to let my guard down and truly enjoy the event."

Another attendee, Suchitra Bhasin, added, "The event's vibe was great. As a woman, we do need some me-time and therefore it is all the more important to have events like this that celebrate women and their talents. Seeing all the ladies letting their hair down and enjoying it to their fullest was amazing. I had an awesome time and look forward to being part of the next event."

WCT is a community organisation for women of South Asian and Indian ethnicities. It was established in 2014 to ensure the well-being of socially-isolated senior citizens and new migrants of the Punjabi Indian community.
