Yoga's positive effect reaches far beyond physical well-being: Dr Gaurav Sharma

I had the pleasure of co-hosting the 8th annual International Day of Yoga in Parliament with Ginny Andersen MP, the Art Of Living Foundation New Zealand and High Commission of India to New Zealand. The event was celebrated across 150 countries around the world and we were excited to be the first to host it in the world.

The United Nations officially recognised yoga in 2015 however it has been widely practiced for hundreds of years and has seen a steady rise of followers in our increasingly globally connected world.

Yoga’s positive effects reach far beyond taha tinana (physical wellbeing) into taha wairua(spiritual wellbeing), taha hinengaro (mental and emotional wellbeing), and taha whanau (family and social wellbeing) with connection to the whenua (land and roots) forming the foundation.

Looking after our body, mind and spirit is especially important after all the challenges we have faced and as we reconnect with ourselves and the world.

Huge thanks to everyone who turned up in the cold Wellington morning with yoga mat and smiles on their face.
