The Indian High Commission in Wellington has a new Head of Chancery.
Mukesh Ghiya took charge as Second Secretary (Consular Affairs and Head of Chancery) on 20 May 2022.
Shri Ghiya, whose career as a diplomat spans over 25 years, has served in various Indian missions abroad, including Angola, UK, Papua New Guinea, Ukraine and Iran.
He has also held different positions at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), New Delhi. Before coming to New Zealand, he was attached to the Nepal and Bhutan desk in the Ministry.
Shri Ghiya arrives just in time to oversee the shifting of the Indian High Commission from its present location at Lambton Quay to brand new premises in Wellington Central, neighbouring the Embassy of Thailand.
Among the first steps he took on taking charge was to suggest that mission staff visit the new premises beforehand so that they can hit the ground running and ensure that consular services are not interrupted.
Shri Ghiya has fond memories of his previous posting to Papua New Guinea. He was struck by the informality and warmth that he experienced even at the highest levels.
Shri Ghiya, who hails from Rajasthan, did his post-graduation in Mathematics from Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur. He is accompanied by his wife Shashi and two sons, Tanmay and Vaaman, who are enrolled in Wellington College. His daughter Yagya is currently pursuing a B. Tech degree in India.
Shri Ghiya told Indian Weekender that he was struck by the scenic beauty of NZ. While he looks forward to working for the interests and welfare of Indian nationals, his priorities also include furthering the economic, commercial, cultural and scientific relations between the two countries.
