Open Christchurch 2022 will offer closer look at city's landmark
Lovers of architecture will have a chance to look at some of Christchurch’s most admired buildings during Open Christchurch 2022 on Saturday 30 April and Sunday 1 May. Run by Te Putahi Centre for Architecture and City Making, Open Christchurch is a celebration of city’s architectural heritage and history.
Public will be able to take a closer look at Christchurch’s most fascinating buildings as the two days will see 41 buildings offering controlled public access with five guided walks and a range of other activities, including expert talks and workshops.
Open Christchurch will allow people an opportunity to connect with their city by discovering new spaces or getting up close to the buildings they love. With the behind-the-scenes look and unique activities on offer, this is a chance to learn the ideas, history and vision behind these landmark buildings.
The categories of the buildings which are part of Open Christchurch include government, recreational, commercial, sacred, education, residential buildings and more.
Among the 41 buildings that will be open are: Te Hononga civic offices, Public Trust Office, University of Canterbury, Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple, Turanga Central Library, Te Papa Otakaro.
People will also get to have an exclusive behind-the-fence look at the Christ Church Cathedral rebuild. This tour will be along with members of the Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Project. Though it will not include entry into the building itself, there will be an opportunity to get close to the building and learn more about its history, and rebuild.
People will need to book the tours first. While entry will be free, a small booking fee will apply for visiting private homes.
