Malala Yousafzai, a Nobel laureate and activist, startled everyone on Tuesday night by announcing her marriage to Asser Malik.
"Today marks a precious day in my life," she wrote in a Twitter post. "Asser and I tied the knot to be partners for life. We celebrated a small nikkah ceremony at home in Birmingham with our families," she announced, asking people for prayers.
However, Malala shared four images from the nikkah ceremony, in which she was seen posing with her husband, Asser, and her parents, Ziauddin Yousafzai and Toor Pekai Yousafzai. Malala donned a melon-pink gown with gold embroidery on her wedding day. Malin Fezehai, a photographer and visual journalist friend of hers, photographed her nikkah photos, as per The News.
Meanwhile, Malala Yousafzai, 24, is a Pakistani education activist and the youngest Nobel Peace Prize recipient in history. She earned international attention in 2012 after being shot in the head by the Taliban in northwestern Pakistan for advocating for the fundamental right of girls to an education.
She was 16 years old when she made a speech on the need of gender equality in education at the United Nations (UN) headquarters. The attack on Malala Yousafzai prompted Pakistan to pass its first Right to Education law. Interestingly, she has also published a book about her attack and its aftermath called 'I Am Malala'.
Malala graduated from Oxford University, but she declined a spot at Harvard to concentrate on co-founding the Malala Fund with her father, an organisation that seeks to promote girls' education programmes across the globe.
