Khalistani supporter heckles top Indian diplomat in US

India’s ambassador to the United States Taranjit Singh Sandhu encountered a tense standoff during his visit to Hicksville Gurdwara in Long Island, New York.

According to ANI, while attending Gurpurab prayers, Sandhu faced a confrontation with extremists, as depicted in a video circulating on social media.

These individuals expressed support for Hardeep Singh Nijjar and Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, both designated as terrorists by India. The situation escalated, prompting the ambassador to swiftly leave the premises. Outside the gurdwara, a protestor was observed waving the Khalistani flag.

This incident is not an isolated occurrence. Two months ago, the Indian high commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, encountered a similar situation when he was denied entry to a Glasgow gurdwara by a pro-Khalistani activist, as documented in an Instagram video by 'Sikh Youth UK'.

In July, a suspected Khalistani group committed arson at the same location, and in March, the consulate faced another attack. Following these events, India raised concerns with the US, urging preventive measures.

Recently, the US shared intelligence with India regarding a criminal nexus involving terrorists, gun runners, and organised criminals. This intelligence holds significant implications for India's national security, and the Ministry of External Affairs has acknowledged its gravity, taking necessary actions.

Ambassador Sandhu, despite the challenges, expressed positivity about his visit, sharing on Twitter his participation in Gurpurab with the local sangat, including Afghan members. His post highlighted engaging in kirtan, discussing Guru Nanak's teachings, sharing langar, and praying for universal blessings.

Recognising the challenges faced by Indian diplomats globally, particularly with the rise of extremist elements, India's diplomatic circles are actively engaging with foreign counterparts to ensure the safety of their diplomats and address broader security concerns.
