Shanti Niwas Charitable Trust, a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting Indian and South Asian seniors in Auckland, celebrated the International Day of Older Persons on October 9.

The event held at Onehunga was a lively and heartwarming occasion, with seniors, families, and community members coming together to honour the elderly.

A highlight of the morning was the presence of Melissa Lee, Minister for Ethnic Communities, who served as the chief guest. In a speech that resonated deeply with the audience, she shared personal anecdotes about how her mother, who lives with her, plays a crucial role in her professional success.

She emphasised the importance of family support in balancing personal and professional life, drawing warm applause from the crowd of at least 100 guests. Her heartfelt words underscored the vital role elderly family members often play behind the scenes, not just in families, but in the broader community.

As part of the celebration, Lee also took the time to felicitate a few elderly members of Shanti Niwas, acknowledging their contributions and their significance in the community. The gesture was met with great appreciation, and the honoured seniors expressed their gratitude to both Shanti Niwas and the minister for recognising them on such a meaningful occasion.

The celebration featured a variety of cultural performances, including traditional dance, which delighted the audience. The event focused on promoting respect and care for the elderly, reflecting Shanti Niwas’s mission to ensure seniors are valued, supported, and integrated into society. Several speakers at the event also praised the trust for its 30 years of dedicated service, particularly its work in assisting those experiencing elder abuse and family violence.

The event concluded with a healthy vegetarian lunch, offering attendees the chance to connect and celebrate the contributions of Auckland’s elderly South Asian community.

Shanti Niwas’s ongoing efforts, exemplified by this celebration, continue to make a significant impact, ensuring that seniors remain cherished members of society.
