Rotorua Marks Spiritual Milestone With Bhajan Evening
The Rotorua community embraced a spiritual and cultural landmark on Friday, 6 December 2024, as the Hindu Elders Foundation Rotorua hosted its first-ever Bhajan and Kirtan Sammelan. Held at the Hindu Heritage Centre from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, the event celebrated traditional devotional music and fostered meaningful community connections.
The evening unfolded as a harmonious blend of bhajans (devotional songs) and kirtans (sacred chants), performed by talented local artists. Rooted in the spiritual heritage of Bharat (India), the gathering transcended cultural boundaries, resonating with Rotorua's diverse community.
Guna Magesan, President of the Hindu Council of New Zealand, lauded the performers, stating, “The heartfelt singing infused the evening with profound spiritual energy, leaving everyone uplifted and inspired.” He praised the audience's enthusiastic participation, highlighting the shared joy and devotion that defined the event's success.
Vijay Chand, President of the Hindu Elders Foundation Rotorua, welcomed attendees, emphasising the Sammelan’s broader purpose. “This is more than a musical evening—it is a celebration of devotion, spirituality, and unity,” he said, envisioning the event as an annual tradition that would strengthen community bonds.
The event showcased performers from across age groups: students (6–17 years), youth (18–35 years), and seniors (36+ years). Prize winners included Jennika Siya Kumar, Vidya Vasudevan, and Sandhya Pawan in their respective categories. The Rotorua Satsang Boys, led by Rajneel Deo, clinched the overall prize with captivating devotional renditions.
Artists from Auckland, Tauranga, and Wellington have expressed interest in future Sammelans, signalling its potential to become a major cultural highlight.
Beyond music, the event underscored the Hindu Elders Foundation’s commitment to inclusivity and community engagement. Vijay Chand remarked, “The Foundation represents not just senior citizens but custodians of wisdom and knowledge, connecting generations through initiatives that enrich the community.”
