Acting Detective Inspector Alisse Robertson says a homicide investigation has been launched.

The woman suffered multiple stab wounds and died at the scene, Robertson says.

The man people are looking for is in his late 30s, was last seen in the Mt Wellington area wearing dark coloured pants, black jumper with white writing on the front and white shoes.

He also had a green t-shirt on his head.

He is not previously wanted for violent crimes.

Robertson says the offender and victim were on the bus near each other for some time and she was not aware of an altercation prior to the stabbing.

About nine other passengers were on the bus and are being provided with support, she says.

The man is known to police and the attack has being described as random.

The bus was moving when the attack happened, Robertson says.
Police do not believe the offender is being helped by anyone.

"I can absolutely understand people's vulnerability, feeling unsafe. I would say keep your situation awareness up. If you feel unsafe or you are seeing something that may be suspicious or you don't feel good about or could be a crime, please call 111."
Police have increased visibility in the area, Robertson says.

The East Auckland area is where the offender feels most comfortable, Robertson says.

His family are concerned for his welfare and really want him to cooperate with police, she says.
