NZ Sikh Community Pays Tribute At Māori King's Tangi

Former New Zealand MP Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi represented the Sikh community at the Tangi of Māori King Tūheitia, offering a poignant tribute on behalf of Sikhs across Aotearoa. The ceremony, held at Turangawaewae, was attended by members of the New Zealand Council of Sikh Affairs, Sikh Council of New Zealand, and Gurdwara Sikh Sangat Turanga.

In his address to the Māori royal family and the gathered community, Bakshi expressed profound respect and humility, underscoring the shared values between the Māori and Sikh communities. He highlighted their mutual commitment to cultural preservation, respect, and integrity.

 



"The bond between the Māori and Sikh communities is built on mutual respect and shared values," Bakshi stated. "The Māori King embodied these principles, serving as a beacon of strength and unity for his people."

As a part of the tribute, the Sikh attendees recited the "Mool Mantra Path," with translations provided in Te Reo and English, ensuring that the audience could grasp the spiritual significance of the prayer.

Bakshi also reflected on the Sikh principle of "Sarbat da Bhala," which emphasizes the welfare of all. He drew parallels between this concept and the Māori dedication to collective well-being and the protection of sacred lands and traditions, noting how these shared values have fortified the connection between the two communities.

Offering the Sikh community's condolences, Bakshi thanked King Tūheitia for his leadership and reaffirmed a commitment to fostering unity, understanding, and respect among all peoples in New Zealand. He conveyed deep sympathies to the Māori royal family and expressed hope that the King's legacy would inspire continued efforts toward a more harmonious society.

The Tangi brought together leaders from diverse communities, all united in honouring a leader whose influence will resonate for generations. The event underscored the strong ties between the Māori and Sikh communities, reflecting their joint commitment to the well-being of New Zealand.
