New Zealand Moves Down in Global Best Countries List

New Zealand has slipped to ninth place in the latest global ranking of the world’s best countries, according to a survey of nearly 17,000 respondents from 89 nations, Stuff reported. The annual Best Countries Ranking, conducted by US News & World Report in partnership with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, assesses countries based on 73 attributes grouped into 10 key categories, including quality of life, entrepreneurship, and social purpose.

Switzerland maintained its position as the best country for the third consecutive year, marking its seventh overall victory in the ranking. Known for its wealth, low unemployment, and skilled workforce, Switzerland continues to boast one of the highest GDPs per capita globally, as reported by the CIA World Factbook. The nation’s cultural diversity and rich intellectual history also set it apart.

The report highlighted Switzerland’s long-standing tradition of neutrality, which has attracted some of the world’s most brilliant minds during times of conflict, such as James Joyce, Lord Byron, and Voltaire. “Swiss citizens have won more Nobel Prizes and registered more patents per capita than many other nations,” the report noted.

Japan claimed the second spot, excelling in categories like entrepreneurship and quality of life. The United States ranked third, followed by Canada and Australia. Rounding out the top ten were Sweden, Germany, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Denmark.

New Zealand, while dropping one spot, was praised for its strengths in agility, social purpose, and adventure. The country’s scenic landscapes, made famous by the "Lord of the Rings" films, continue to attract global admiration. The report also commended New Zealand’s “impressive growth and transformation” since gaining independence, as well as its high per capita income and education investments relative to GDP.

New Zealand's pioneering spirit was further acknowledged, with mentions of national icons like Sir Edmund Hillary, the first to summit Mount Everest, and Lord Rutherford, who famously split the atom. The bungee jump and Hamilton Jet boat were also highlighted as Kiwi inventions.

The country's role in global peacekeeping and security, aided by its membership in international organisations such as the United Nations and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, further solidified its position as a global leader.
