The Victorian government has taken a pivotal step in the Revitalising Central Dandenong Initiative, approving a key stage that promises to bring hundreds of new homes and jobs to the area, Beat reported.

This phase of the project will see the creation of a vibrant Little India precinct, along with significant residential and commercial developments. The plan includes approximately 470 new homes, 2,500 square metres of community space, and new commercial and retail areas, including a supermarket and food market hall.

Melbourne-based developer Capital Alliance is spearheading the development, which is expected to inject $600 million into the local economy and support around 2,600 construction jobs. The Little India precinct will play a central role in enhancing Dandenong’s cultural and economic appeal.

Initiated by the Labor Government in 2006, the Revitalising Central Dandenong project aims to attract over $1.2 billion in private sector investment and sustain up to 5,000 jobs. The forthcoming Metro Tunnel, set to open ahead of schedule in 2025, is expected to further enhance Dandenong’s connectivity, offering faster access to jobs, hospitals, and education.

Minister for Development Victoria, Colin Brooks, underscored the project’s importance, stating, “Dandenong is booming, and we’re ensuring more homes and jobs are created closer to public services, so local families can access everything they need, close to where they live.”

Gabrielle Williams, Member for Dandenong, highlighted the impact of the new precinct, saying, “We’re transforming this area into a vibrant new neighbourhood with hundreds more homes and jobs, right on top of a dining and entertainment precinct.”

Capital Alliance CEO and founder, Mohan Du, remarked, “The approval of the Planning Scheme Amendment marks an important milestone in delivering this generational Masterplan vision, which is to transform Central Dandenong into Melbourne’s second capital city.”

Development Victoria will continue working with Capital Alliance to finalise the Development Plan, which will require final approval before construction begins.
