Auckland Indian Retailers Association held a meeting recently with an aim to bring 160 organisations focused on addressing rising crime rates and urging the government to implement immediate reforms. The key aim was to unify these groups into a single, powerful voice to advocate for stronger government intervention.

During the meeting, it was noted that the government has announced a $1.5 million allocation for an advisory committee. However, Rajesh Kumar, President of the organising body, emphasised the urgent need for financial support for victims of crime.

“Every time a store is robbed, insurance companies increase premiums, labeling the business as high risk. The government should provide compensation funds to retailers who suffer significant losses due to ram raids. Businesses face massive expenses to repair broken windows, doors, and cash registers, all while still paying GST and taxes.”

Jagjeet Sidhu, General Secretary of the Auckland Indian Retailers Association, called for a more comprehensive policy response. “The government should consider waiving GST and taxes for a year or more for any business impacted by ram raids, allowing them to recover from their damages.”

The committee members unanimously agreed that if decisive action is not taken by all political parties, they are prepared to stage a hunger strike until a robust law is enforced.

The organisation also expressed deep concern over the rise in youth crime.

“We are alarmed by the direction in which society is heading. We care for all children, and no child should be driven to commit such acts. The government owes the public an apology for failing to control youth crime across New Zealand,” the organisation stated.

The group called for a united effort from all political parties to work towards the betterment of Aotearoa, ensuring New Zealand remains a safe and reputable place to live and work.
