Hindu Elders Foundation Marks 17 Years with Grand Celebration
The Hindu Elders Foundation (HEF) celebrated its 17th Annual Day at the Balmoral Community Hall, Bharatiya Mandir Complex, drawing a distinguished crowd of community leaders and guests. Among the notable attendees were Judge Ajit Swaran Singh, MP Paramjit Parmar, Jessica Phaung, Harnam Singh Golian, Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, Mahesh Bindra, Siva Kilari, Rahul Chopra, Navtej Randhawa, Narinder Bhana, Roshan Nauharia, Jeet Sachdev, Hemant Parashar, Kalburjee Lingippa, Vishav Sharma, Harjit Walia, Roopa Sachdev, and Jyoti Parshar.
The vibrant atmosphere was palpable as HEF President Satya Prakash Pahuja and his dedicated team of volunteers welcomed attendees. HEF, established on July 7, 2007, has grown into a pivotal organisation serving senior citizens of diverse backgrounds. It originated at the Hindu Heritage Centre in Mangere, envisioned as a hub for New Zealand's Hindu community.

The foundation's journey began with guidance from Pravin Patel and Dinesh Pahuja. The original trustees, including Hemant Prashar, remain actively involved. The first president, Chelliah Sanmuganathan, played a crucial role in HEF's formation but passed away soon after. Since then, Satya Prakash Pahuja has led the organisation, steering it through various milestones.
HEF has been instrumental in celebrating cultural events like Matariki, Shri Ram Navami, Shri Guru Nanak Prakash Utsav, Baisakhi, and Christmas. Five years ago, under the late Jyoti Swaroop Dua, HEF began a unique Diwali celebration by visiting rest homes across Auckland to distribute gifts and entertain residents. This project continues under Chander Praksh Satija's leadership.

During the COVID-19 lockdowns, HEF's morale-boosting initiatives included the AUCKLAND FAAG MAHOTSAV-21, in collaboration with the Indian High Commission and 29 community organisations. In 2009, HEF hosted a National Elders Conference with the theme "OLD IS GOLD," attracting senior citizen groups and government agencies.

HEF's commitment to community service was evident during the recent Auckland floods, where members, in association with Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh, assisted in cleaning and food distribution in affected areas.

The 17th-anniversary celebration featured speeches from dignitaries who lauded HEF's contributions. A musical program organised by Rashmi Sharma captivated the audience, and attendees were welcomed with traditional tilak. The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Yatish Wadhera, HEF's secretary, followed by a delicious vegetarian lunch.
