On October 15, 2024, the Hindu Council of New Zealand, in partnership with the New Zealand Police, hosted a free recruitment seminar at the Hindu Heritage Centre in Rotorua. This informative event was designed to shed light on career opportunities within the NZ Police, specifically targeting the Indian community and the broader public.
The seminar attracted over 25 participants from Rotorua, Tauranga, and Hamilton, providing a valuable opportunity for individuals considering a career change or starting their professional journeys. Attendees were welcomed to engage with the police force, learning about various roles, qualifications, and the recruitment process.
Presentations were delivered by four NZ Police officers: Senior Constable Lania Day (BOP NewCops Support Officer), Constable Shonit Chandra (Ethnic Liaison Officer), Sergeant Shaminderpal Singh, and Detective Constable Gurvinder Singh. The speakers offered diverse insights into the responsibilities and benefits of a policing career.
Participants enjoyed interactive Q&A sessions, where they could pose questions and receive guidance on their applications. Dr. Guna Magesan, President of the Hindu Council of New Zealand and seminar coordinator, expressed satisfaction with the enthusiasm displayed by attendees. “The attendees were asking thoughtful questions and clearing their doubts with the NZ Police officers, which was very satisfying,” he remarked.
Although the majority of attendees were from the Indian community, Dr. Magesan hopes to see greater diversity in future events. “We would love to see members from other ethnic communities joining us next time,” he said. Senior Constable Lania Day echoed this sentiment, noting that future invitations might extend to the entire Bay of Plenty region to encourage broader participation.
Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Attendee Kenil Paliwal highlighted the importance of understanding the core values of respect and service within the NZ Police, stating, “The seminar was incredibly informative and motivating.” Another participant, Heema, appreciated the detailed insights into the recruitment process. “It gave me clarity on how to prepare for the application process. It was a great experience, and I look forward to attending future events,” she said. Heema also shared that she would encourage her friends to attend the next seminar, as many were disappointed they couldn't participate this time.
