A petrol station employee has been assaulted during an overnight robbery in Whangārei, police say.

Detective Senior Sergeant Shane Pilmer, of the Whangārei CIB, said the offenders pulled up at the Z station on Kamo Rd in two stolen cars just after midnight.

The store was locked but a staff member was operating the night pay window at the time.

Pilmer said the offenders smashed the glass door to get in, threatened and assaulted the worker, and fled with stolen items.

He wanted to hear from anyone who saw the stolen cars Tuesday night.

They were a white Toyota Aqua, with the registration plate NPL312, and a silver Nissan Bluebird, registration LUD872.

Any sightings can be passed on to police by calling 105 and quoting the reference number 250122/5471.
