Beyond Ayodhya: Auckland prepares for Ram Lalla

Brace yourselves for an unparalleled spectacle as Auckland's Hindu community prepares to host a grand celebration on January 21, 2024.

Organised by Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Prana Pratishta Mahotsav Committee, the event promises an amalgamation of religious fervour, cultural enchantment, and a touch of New Zealand magic.

The vibrant festivities, set to unfold at the iconic Outer Oval, Eden Park, from 1pm to 6pm, will not just pay homage to Lord Ram but will also transform the cricket ground into a mesmerising rendition of Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Rama.

The event, ‘Ayodhya in Eden Park’, is particularly significant as it precedes the official opening of the Ram Mandir at Ayodhya in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on January 22, 2024

Vinod Kumar, the dynamic force behind the organising committee, tells us what makes the event unique. "The event aims to unite the Hindu community in New Zealand to come under one umbrella and celebrate the iconic opening of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

“We want to create memories that will linger for years to come. This is not just any celebration; it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It took more than 500 years and many lives to once again build a temple where it once stood.

“It's not just about a temple; it's about rewriting history. When Shri Ram Ji returned after 14 years, we have been celebrating Diwali, but this is happening after 500 years. We thought it must be celebrated in a more significant way again."

Beyond the spiritual and cultural extravaganza, the event offers a kaleidoscope of activities. In anticipation of the grand celebration, the committee has organised a ‘mahayagya’, cultural programmes from various local organisations, storytelling competitions and Ram Leela among others. A massive Ram Darbar will be created at Eden Park, providing a unique photo opportunity. The day will conclude with ‘mahaprasad’ served 5pm onwards.

Dhansukh Lal, another committee member and president of Auckland Indian Association Inc., shares his excitement, "We are expecting more than 3,000 people during the day. We are doing this event not only to celebrate our Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya but also to give information about Ayodhya and its accomplishments over the last 500 years.

“The highlight will be a mahayagya to welcome our Ram Lalla, conducted by priests from different temples. There will be an opportunity for the public to participate in the yagna. But that's not all; we have cultural performances to keep the energy soaring throughout the afternoon."

As Auckland gets ready to channel the spirit of Ayodhya, the city will play host to a diverse guest list. Invitations have been sent to Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, Minister of Ethnic Communities Melissa Lee, and High Commissioner of India Neeta Bhushan among others.

The preparations for this massive affair have been nothing short of exhilarating. Vinod Kumar says, "Considering we only started about three weeks ago, during the holiday season, the support from various organisations has been overwhelming.

“We are still looking for volunteers who could help us on January 21. To do a major event like this, we also need financial support, and we would appreciate any donations or sponsors for this event.”

As the stage is set for Auckland to recreate the spirit of Ayodhya, the Hindu community awaits a day filled with devotion, celebration, and cultural unity.

Pooja Patel, a Papatoetoe resident, said, "This is more than a celebration; it's a spiritual journey. The idea of Eden Park transforming into Ayodhya is surreal. I can't wait to be a part of this historic moment."

Rajesh Sharma, another enthusiastic follower, added, "I feel blessed to be part of something so momentous. It's more than just a celebration; it's a spiritual journey connecting us to our roots. Auckland is about to witness something magical!"
