Five teenagers found themselves trapped inside a dairy in Three Kings, Auckland, after an attempted robbery went awry, The New Zealand Herald reported.

The incident took place around 2 p.m. at Duke Street Superette on the corner of Mt Eden Road. The group, reportedly arriving in a stolen vehicle, entered the store with the intent to steal cash.

According to Detective Senior Sergeant Laura Hadwen, the teenagers initially assaulted the shopkeeper, but the victim managed to escape. While the offenders attempted to access the cash register, the store workers acted swiftly, lowering the security roller door and trapping them inside.

Police were alerted and arrived at the scene to find the suspects still inside the store. "Instead of making a getaway, the door was opened, and the five were placed in handcuffs," Hadwen stated.

The group consisted of three young women and two young men, aged between 14 and 17. Police are continuing to investigate the incident as part of broader efforts to address violent crimes against businesses in Auckland. "Investigators across Auckland are thoroughly examining this and other violent incidents affecting our community, and charges continue to be laid," Hadwen added.
