Auckland Council has recently posted several paid positions on its LinkedIn jobs board, inviting Aucklanders to apply for leadership roles that will help govern Tāmaki Makaurau in the upcoming local elections.

With this year's elections set for October, Auckland’s current political leaders will either seek re-election or step down, leaving room for fresh faces to step into the race. The Council is now looking for a diverse pool of candidates to fill key roles in local government.

“It’s important to have a range of new and differing perspectives when it comes to leading the unique region that is Tāmaki Makaurau,” Lou-Ann Ballantyne, Auckland Council’s Governance and Engagement General Manager, explains.

New call-to-action

The governing body comprises 20 ward councillors, a mayor, and 21 local board representatives who serve at the community level. Together, they are responsible for key decisions in areas such as urban planning, economic development, transport, the natural environment, and local infrastructure. With so many crucial roles to be filled, Ballantyne emphasised the significance of these elections and the need for individuals who care deeply for their communities and have strong decision-making skills.

“We’re hoping for a diverse range of representatives with good local knowledge who care for their community and have great decision-making skills,” she says.

Ballantyne believes the ideal candidates could come from many walks of life. “Without even knowing it, so many people would be great in these positions. If you already play a pivotal part in your community, like sports coaching, coordinating events, advising or providing consulting services to organisations, being the skipper of your waka or successfully steering your household – you could be perfect for the role,” she says.

No prior political experience is necessary, as the Auckland Council will provide training to help new members get up to speed. The positions offer opportunities for growth and development, allowing individuals to take on rewarding responsibilities while making a tangible impact on their community.

“There’s plenty of room for growth, development and a chance to try something completely different while taking on rewarding responsibilities that’ll make a difference to your community,” she says.

To learn more about these opportunities, Aucklanders can attend a live webinar on Wednesday, April 30, at 4:30 p.m. The session will provide essential information about standing in the Auckland Local Elections 2025 and what elected members can expect to do.
