The Kiwi-Indian Teens Transforming Gardening With Seed Bombs

Tipu Seedlings, a budding enterprise founded by two 17-year-old Kiwi-Indians, is on a mission to transform gardening for beginners. Established in early 2024, the company has developed what’s being described as seed bombs that make it easier for anyone to start gardening, regardless of space or experience.

The idea for Tipu Seedlings was inspired from a desire to create an accessible gardening solution. Co-founders Ryan Antia and Sehjot, both students at Mount Albert Grammar School, recognised a gap in the market for beginner-friendly gardening products.

“We wanted to provide a simple way for people to get into gardening without needing a traditional soil bed,” Ryan shared with The Indian Weekender. The result was seed bombs, compact balls made from nutritious clay and minerals that promote environmental sustainability while supporting biodiversity.

The business is spearheaded by a team of six managing directors, including academics and leaders from Mount Albert Grammar School, ensuring that Tipu Seedlings benefits from a wealth of knowledge and expertise.

Unlike traditional seeds, Tipu Seedlings founders say their products are designed to take up minimal space and include both native and non-native seed options.

 “Our seed bombs are compact and easy to use, making them perfect for anyone passionate about gardening,” says Ryan.

Each seed bomb comes with personalised instructions for watering and planting, catering to both novice and experienced gardeners.

The company’s motto, “Te whakatipu i te ao, kotahi te tipu i te wa kotahi”, translates to “Growing back the planet, one plant at a time”. This ethos reflects Tipu Seedlings’ commitment to promoting biodiversity and supporting New Zealand's ecosystem. The founders are particularly focused on reintroducing indigenous plants, such as the Golden Tainui, that were lost during colonial times.

Ryan and Sehjot have Indian roots, with Ryan’s Parsi family hailing from Mumbai and Sehjot being born in Punjab. This multicultural background influences their approach to gardening and community engagement. Sehjot serves as the marketing manager, managing the company's social media presence and promotions.

Tipu Seedlings not only operates online but also has a physical presence at the local Parnell Markets, allowing customers to view products in person at 545 Parnell Road, Auckland.

Using a seed bomb is straightforward: customers simply toss it, water it, and watch it bloom. The production process involves mixing powdered clay and soil, rolling them into balls, and embedding locally sourced seeds within.

Looking ahead, Tipu Seedlings aims to expand its product line to include a broader variety of unique native and non-native seeds, enhancing its offerings for environmentally conscious gardeners.

With a strong foundation and a vision for sustainable gardening, Tipu Seedlings aims to inspire a new generation of gardeners and make a positive impact on the environment.
