Tauranga Restaurant Brings Community Together With Free Annual Lunch
Castle 91, a well-known Indian restaurant in Tauranga, is gearing up to host its annual free community lunch, a tradition it has upheld since the pandemic, The New Zealand Herald reported. On Monday, Castle 91 will host its 2025 free community lunch at its Cameron Road restaurant in Tauranga, running from 11:30 am to 2:00 pm.
This initiative began as a one-off event in 2018 but evolved into an annual occurrence during the pandemic when many locals faced financial hardships. According to restaurant owner Mike Dhillion, the event is a way to give back to a community that has supported Castle 91 over the years. “As community members, we believe it’s our social responsibility to give back,” Herald quoted. “This is especially important for locals who couldn’t afford a Christmas or New Year meal.”
Dhillion recalled the overwhelming response to the first pandemic-era community lunch. “We saw long lines outside and realised that many people needed help but were hesitant to ask for it. Attendees included single mothers who lost jobs and individuals affected by sickness or disability,” he said. Since then, Castle 91 has provided 300-400 free meals annually during the holiday season.
One story that stands out to Dhillion is of a man who became homeless during the pandemic and frequently visited Castle 91 for free meals. “He slept in his car for months and relied on us for food,” Dhillion told Herald. “When life improved for him, he returned to thank us and even paid for a couple of butter chicken meals. That moment reaffirmed our commitment to this tradition.”
The values behind the free lunch are deeply rooted in the Sikh principles of charity and service. Dhillion explained that these practices, known as Daswandh and Langar, inspire their efforts. “We’re carrying forward the spirit of giving by ensuring everyone in the community feels included in the celebrations,” he said. “Tauranga is like family to us. Just as we wouldn’t let a family member go hungry, we’re here to support those in need.”
Last year, 50-60 people attended the lunch, and Dhillion expects even more this year. “We’ve prepared for up to 120 attendees and can serve up to 150 within the time frame. We’d love to hit that number,” he said. The menu will feature butter chicken, vegetable korma, rice, and naan bread. Additionally, this year’s event will include Chole Bhature, a popular Indian dish.
For those willing to pay, the butter chicken special will be available for $10. Locals can contact Castle 91 at 07 571 8891 or email castle_91@ymail.com for more details about the community lunch.
Dhillion and his team at Castle 91 continue to uphold their commitment to the Tauranga community, blending cultural traditions with acts of generosity. “We’re here to ensure no one is left out of the holiday celebrations,” Dhillion said.
