Step By Step: Hindu Women Forum Conquers Tongariro Crossing Again

The Hindu Women Forum (HWF), a division of the Hindu Council of New Zealand, successfully completed its second Tongariro Alpine Crossing on 22 February 2025. The event reaffirmed the forum’s commitment to women’s empowerment, well-being, and environmental stewardship.
A group of 11 participants from Auckland, Rotorua, and Wellington, accompanied by family members, embarked on the 20.2 km trek through one of New Zealand’s most breathtaking yet challenging alpine landscapes. Each participant had a unique motivation—some sought adventure, others aimed to push their physical limits, while many wished to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the terrain.
“My dream has come true. The experience was transformational—not just a physical challenge but also a spiritual journey that aligns with the Hindu philosophy of self-discovery and perseverance,” said Shradha Patel from Wellington. “The sense of inner fulfilment is beyond words; one must experience it to truly understand.”
Among the participants was 11-year-old Tanishka Kaki from Rotorua, the youngest member of the group. While the initiative was primarily designed to empower women, the presence of family members provided moral and physical support, transforming the event into a shared community experience.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing, known for its volcanic landscapes, emerald lakes, and rugged terrain, symbolises resilience, strength, and personal growth—values deeply aligned with HWF’s mission.
For the first time, a meditation session was conducted at the summit by Varsha Kaki from Rotorua, adding a spiritual dimension to the trek. “The enthusiasm, resilience, and spirit of togetherness made this journey more than just a physical challenge—it was a deeply enriching experience for all,” she said. “I was honoured to lead the meditation session at the summit. This initiative is also a wonderful way to bring women together, foster new friendships, and support one another in a collective journey of empowerment.” HWF now plans to integrate yoga into future crossings to further enrich the experience.

“This year’s event was about encouraging more women to step out of their comfort zones, build confidence, and connect with nature,” said Kanan Acharya, a representative of the Hindu Women Forum.
“The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is not just a trek—it is a testament to inner strength, determination, and the power of collective support. We look forward to continuing this tradition and inspiring more women to take on challenges that foster personal and spiritual growth,” she added.
The event was made possible through the dedication of volunteers and organisers who share HWF’s vision of empowering women through transformative experiences. Safety remained a top priority, with trained guides and thorough planning ensuring a smooth and enjoyable journey for all.
Nagabrahmeswara KM from Wellington reflected on the experience, saying, “The Tongariro Alpine Crossing was both a challenging and rewarding experience. Without proper preparation and a mindful approach, it would have been difficult. I met incredible people whose positivity and strong attitude boosted my confidence, making this journey even more special. I am extremely proud of this accomplishment and strongly encourage others to take up such activities. They help us focus on the present moment and deepen self-awareness.”
