Auckland is set to light up this October with several Diwali festivals

Auckland is set to light up this October with several Diwali festivals. Each event promises to bring unique experiences and cultural vibrancy. The BNZ Auckland Diwali Festival, the inaugural NZ Diwali Festival in Manukau, and the Waitakere Indian Association’s celebration in Henderson are all gearing up to celebrate the festival of lights in style.

From 3D projection mapping in the heart of the city to vibrant cultural performances in Manukau and West Auckland, there’s something for everyone. Whether you're looking to enjoy traditional food, shop at craft stalls, or simply bask in the festive spirit, these events ensure Aucklanders have multiple ways to partake in Diwali celebrations.

BNZ Auckland Diwali Festival

Returning to the city centre, the BNZ Auckland Diwali Festival will take place over the weekend of October 19-20, but the celebrations start early with a 3D projection mapping display on Auckland Town Hall beginning October 14.

Organised by Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, the projection will fuse modern technology with traditional Diwali themes to tell the story of the festival in a fresh and engaging way.

New additions to this year’s lineup include a Lightbox art exhibition at Bledisloe Lane showcasing works by Tiffany Singh and Jessie Kanji, a Bollywood movie marathon at Event Cinemas, and a themed photo booth at Aotea Centre.

Traditional elements, such as food stalls, arts and crafts, henna designs, and live performances, remain at the heart of the event.

For those keen to explore more, forums on Indian cooking and youth entrepreneurship will take place at the Aotea Centre, offering insights into Indian culinary traditions and the innovative spirit of Auckland’s young entrepreneurs.

The festival, now in its 20th year, attracted over 65,000 people in 2023, and with an expanded footprint, organisers are hoping for even larger crowds this year.

Nick Hill, Chief Executive at Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, emphasised the festival’s importance to Auckland’s cultural landscape: “This event showcases the contributions of Auckland’s Indian community and offers everyone a chance to experience something new.”

Waitakere Diwali

In Henderson, the Waitakere Indian Association’s Diwali festival is set to be West Auckland’s biggest Diwali event. Scheduled for October 20, from 10am to 10pm at The Trusts Arena, this free celebration offers a day packed with performances, food, and fun.

More than 600 performers will take the stage, featuring everything from classical Indian dances to hip hop and Bollywood numbers. A special Ram Leela performance will explore the traditions behind Diwali, while more than 25 food stalls and over 40 craft stalls will keep attendees busy with delicious treats and festive shopping.

Kids can enjoy amusement rides and test their cricket skills in batting and bowling nets, adding an extra layer of excitement for families.

The festival will conclude with a breathtaking fireworks display and is also raising funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation, allowing attendees to celebrate while supporting a great cause.

Manukau Diwali

In Manukau, the Akal Foundation’s inaugural NZ Diwali Festival is making waves with its focus on community and inclusion. Scheduled for October 19, the festival aims to promote social cohesion and celebrate the vibrant heritage of the Indian diaspora.

Highlights include classical Indian performances, energetic Bhangra, and even a Haka, blending Indian and Kiwi traditions. With more than 50 food and retail stalls, DJ sets, and a kids’ fashion show, there’s no shortage of entertainment.

The festival also boasts giveaways worth over $20,000 and concludes with a grand fireworks display, making it a family-friendly extravaganza.

What sets the NZ Diwali Festival apart is its commitment to inclusivity, with free on-site childcare and a focus on uniting people from all walks of life. The Akal Foundation’s vision is to create an annual celebration that not only embraces Diwali’s cultural significance but also fosters unity and joy in the Manukau region.
