Pakistani Community NZ Organises First Ever Diwali
Sindhi Sangat New Zealand (SSNZ) made history by hosting the first-ever Diwali celebration organised by the Pakistani community in New Zealand. Held at the Western Springs Garden Community Hall, the event brought together over 50 families—more than 160 attendees—from both Pakistani and Indian origins for a vibrant evening of light, culture, and unity.
The celebration began with a safety briefing, followed by a warm welcome from an SSNZ official, officially marking the start of the event. Attendees were treated to a thoughtfully curated video presentation by Manoj Kumar, which set the tone for the evening's festivities.
A key moment of the evening was the symbolic Diya lighting ceremony, led by Hon. Melissa Lee and Mr. Touqueer Khan. The lighting of the diyas, representing the triumph of light over darkness, was accompanied by speeches highlighting the spirit of community and shared values celebrated during Diwali.
Distinguished speakers from across New Zealand, including Hon. Melissa Lee, Mr. M. Tauqueer Khan, Mr. Sunny Kaushal, and Mrs. New Zealand Sindhiya Kirplani, shared insights into the cultural and spiritual significance of Diwali. In a special gesture, Ajrak shawls—a symbol of Sindhi heritage—were presented to honour guests.

Cultural performances brought the evening to life, featuring mesmerising dances by the Dance Worx Group, a guitar performance by Deven Rathi, and a delightful medley by women and children.
This event marked a historic moment, as Indian Sindhi Hindus and Pakistani Sindhis united to celebrate Diwali for the first time in New Zealand. The gathering celebrated shared roots and cultural bonds while fostering interfaith harmony and mutual respect.
