Nilamani Wright: The Kiwi Yoga Teacher Transforming Rotorua
As you arrive in the picturesque town of Rotorua, the sight of Indian faces at nearly every corner stands out, a testament to the growing presence of the Indian community in the city. This visible representation raises questions about how this cultural shift has been embraced by the locals. One key factor behind this growing acceptance might be the regular cultural events held at the Hindu Council in Rotorua, which is not only expanding its infrastructure but also creating a welcoming environment for all communities in the country.
One of the standout initiatives fostering this integration is the popularity of yoga. Nilamani Wright, a yoga instructor with decades of experience, has seen a steady increase in the number of local participants joining her sessions, which are held every Sunday and Wednesday at the Hindu Heritage Centre in Rotorua, an offshoot of the Hindu Council.
“The foundation of the teachings includes Sukshma Vyayama, the ancient yogic technology of Shakti Naam Yoga, designed to revitalise the body, balance energy, and nurture inner harmony,” Nilamani shares.
Her classes have become a hub for people from all walks of life, reflecting the universal appeal and benefits of yoga in the community.
With over three decades of experience in yoga, Nilamani has become a cornerstone of the wellness community in New Zealand, blending ancient traditions with modern teachings to create a transformative experience. As the founder of SoulShine Yoga, Nilamani has dedicated her life to guiding others on a path to holistic health, balance, and inner peace.
Nilamani’s yoga journey spans a rich lineage of teachings, beginning with seven years of training under Swami Shantimurti Okan, whose teachings are rooted in the practices of Swami Satyananda Saraswati. Her learning continued with nearly three decades of study with Dr. Joseph Michael Levry, the founder of Naam Yoga and Shakti Naam Yoga, whose principles continue to shape her approach today.
“SoulShine Yoga is a combination of a vibrant fusion of rhythm, mudra, pranayama, mantra, and movement to create a practice that harmonises the body, mind, and spirit.”
This approach not only enhances physical health but also fosters creativity, resilience, and a deeper sense of connection.
In addition to teaching, Nilamani serves as a representative for NaturalMeds, a holistic health company renowned for its impactful contributions to preventive care and wellness education. In 2022, NaturalMeds was honored with an award as well.
“Teaching at the Hindu Heritage Centre has been a natural extension of my philosophy, as it provides a perfect space to share my teachings with the local community,” Nilamani shares.
For Nilamani , yoga is not just about physical postures; it's about building a sense of community, empowering individuals, and offering a pathway to health that nurtures every aspect of life.
As she continues to inspire and empower the people of Rotorua, Nilamani Wright’s journey serves as a reminder of the profound impact yoga can have on our lives. Her commitment to spreading wellness and her dedication to lifelong learning are a testament to her passion for helping others discover balance, peace, and resilience through the transformative power of yoga.
