July 2024 marked a significant milestone for the alumni of St. Annes High School, Mumbai, as they gathered in Auckland for their inaugural reunion in New Zealand. The event, held to commemorate the Feast of St. Anne, brought together former students and teachers from across New Zealand’s North and South Islands, representing over six decades of the school’s rich 100-year history. It was a night filled with nostalgia, camaraderie, and reflection on the school’s enduring impact through its motto, “With Love and Faith Alone.”

The reunion took place at Christ the King Parish Hall in Owairaka, Auckland, drawing thirty alumni and teachers, along with their families. The venue was adorned with memorabilia including school photos, flags, and banners, all serving as a reminder of the attendees’ school days. The presence of alumni spanning six decades underscored St. Annes’ lasting influence, as ex-students reminisced about their shared experiences. One attendee commented, “It’s been ages since I’ve seen any of the boys.” Another was surprised to discover that some fellow alumni and former teachers now resided in New Zealand, expressing excitement at the opportunity to reconnect through the event.

To further enhance the celebration, heartfelt messages from former principals and teachers in India were shared via video and social media. One message reminded attendees, “You are all away from your motherland, but not away from all of us, from our heritage and our culture.” These messages served to reconnect the alumni to their roots, reminding them of the teachers who had played pivotal roles in shaping their lives.

Beyond reminiscing, the event provided opportunities for networking and mentorship. Alumni exchanged insights, discussed career paths, and explored potential collaborations, demonstrating that such reunions can go beyond socialising to foster professional connections and community engagement. As one organising member put it, “In true St. Annes spirit, our people came together, sharing their talents and resources. This was the true catalyst for the success of the inaugural alumni event in New Zealand.”

The reunion’s organising committee, composed of former students and teachers, managed to pull the event together in just three weeks. The theme, Nā tō rourou, nā taku rourou ka ora ai te iwi—“With your food basket and my food basket, the people will thrive”—embodied the collaborative spirit that made the gathering possible. Despite challenges, such as not having a ready contact list of alumni in New Zealand, the message was quickly spread, and the network was built, culminating in a well-attended and memorable evening.

The organisers expressed their gratitude to everyone who participated and contributed to the event’s success, emphasising the importance of staying connected and growing the alumni network in New Zealand. Plans are already underway for future events that will further strengthen the bonds within the community.

The reunion of St. Annes alumni in New Zealand was not just a celebration of the past but a foundation for future gatherings. It highlighted the importance of preserving cultural ties and creating a supportive network for those living abroad, ensuring that the legacy of St. Annes High School continues to flourish wherever its alumni may be.
