Mata Ka Jagran: A Night Of Spirituality Unites Auckland's Communities

Auckland’s multicultural spirit came alive at the third annual Mata Ka Jagran, held at The Dream Centre in Papatoetoe. The event, which took place at 154 Kolmar Road, drew in people from all over the city for a night of devotion, music, and community bonding. Organised by local businesses and supported by diverse community groups, this spiritual celebration aimed to foster connections among Auckland’s residents while promoting local business in the area.

A Celebration of Diversity and Unity

Mata Ka Jagran-3 was more than just a religious event; it was a celebration of unity. Held in a church, with Sikhs helping prepare and distribute prasad (blessed food), the gathering highlighted the strength of multicultural collaboration. Hon. Jenny Salesa, MP for Ōtāhuhu-Panmure, graced the occasion as the chief guest, recognising the importance of such events in strengthening Auckland’s community ties.

Throughout the night, attendees were immersed in spiritual chants dedicated to the Goddess, alongside soulful hymns from the Sikh tradition that told the poignant stories of Mata Gujri and the Char Sahibzaade. The powerful cries of "Jo Bole So Nihal, Sat Shri Akal!" reverberated through the venue, creating a sense of collective reverence and solidarity.

Food, Culture, and Community Spirit

Food played a significant role in keeping spirits high through the night. Attendees enjoyed various delicious snacks, tea, and prasad as they engaged with one another. In the morning, the gathering concluded with the Mata Tara Rani Katha, where attendees participated in prayers to welcome the new day.

Despite the event’s large scale, no government grants or funding were received. The entire initiative was made possible through contributions from local businesses, a testament to the strength and generosity of Auckland’s Indian community.

Building a Future of Togetherness 

The Mata Ka Jagran received widespread praise from attendees, who expressed their gratitude for the chance to connect with others meaningfully. Rajesh Goel, President of the Auckland Indian Retailers Association, highlighted the importance of such events in bringing the community together. “We are proud to support initiatives that unite the people. These activities foster growth, connection, and understanding,” Goel said.

Jagjeet Sidhu, Secretary of the organising committee, shared his ambitious vision for the future. “We hope to host a ‘Sarv Dharam Samelan’ soon—a gathering of leaders from all faiths. This will create a platform for guiding our youth towards positive goals and building a more united future,” he stated.

As the event came to a close at 6 a.m., attendees left with hearts full of joy and hope.
