Mahesh Kale, a name synonymous with Indian classical music, has been enchanting audiences
worldwide with soulful renditions and captivating performances. His concerts are not just musical
events; they are immersive experiences that transport listeners to a realm of spiritual and emotional
depth.

Aucklanders witnessed this magic unfold on 1 September at the Dorothy Winstone Centre, at
Mahesh’s first concert tour of New Zealand (and the last of his lengthy Australia-New Zealand tour).
In his words, “First concerts are always special”. This was certainly the case for the audience, too –
people could be seen wiping tears of joy.

Mahesh Kale’s music is a harmonious blend of classical, semi-classical, and devotional genres.
Trained under the legendary Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki, Mahesh has mastered the nuances of Indian
classical music, particularly the Khayal and Natya Sangeet forms. His concerts often
feature a mix of these styles, creating a rich tapestry of sound that appeals to both connoisseurs and
casual listeners.

The event, organised by Hemant Shirsat of Shanaayan Arts and Ram Iyer of CFI Events, was
It was meticulous with its organisation and planning, and the show started on time.
Humble and respectful in nature, Mahesh instantly captured the audience with his sublime rendition
of “Ya Kundendu Tusharahara Dhavala” before immersing their emotions into an enormously
complex “Swarmala”, comprising sixteen ragas. This was a composition of his late guru. Mahesh
made the composition look sublimely easy, yet only a musician can tell how complex this composition
really is.

What followed was a rendition of one masterpiece after another – to the point he got his first
standing ovation halfway into the first of the program.

I have rarely witnessed such a captivating performance by any artist in a live performance.

The crowd was so immersed in his magic that they returned very quickly from the break –
something that is usually problematic. He started the second half with “laagi karejva kataar” where
he infused some film songs, highlighting the importance of classical music as the base.

To close out, the much-awaited Abhang came with a medley of Abhangs. The devotional songs
dedicated to the Varkari saints of Maharashtra were deeply moving experiences for the audience –
all of whom he lovingly engaged throughout the evening, which was a notable feature of his concert.
He shared anecdotes and insights about the compositions he performed, providing context and
enhancing the listening experience. This personal touch made the concert more than just a musical
event; it became an educational and inspirational session that left a lasting impact on the audience.

A striking aspect of Mahesh’s performance was his ability to connect the past with the present. He
included traditional compositions that have been passed down through generations, infusing them
with his unique interpretation. This blend of tradition and innovation was a hallmark of the night. It
was a journey through time and culture and a testament to his enduring appeal and versatility.

Another standout of the evening was the precision of his tight-knit set of musicians. The
“laykari’ (rhythm) between the Tabla and Phakawaj players was exquisite, as was the melody from
the harmonium and keyboard players. The percussion player blended really well, and the sound
engineer was simply outstanding, with his clear understanding of getting the perfect balance of
effect and decibel levels.

Known for his emotional intensity and technical brilliance, Mahesh truly stood tall in Auckland. His
unique ability to create an intimate atmosphere, he seamlessly transitioned between different
tempos and moods, keeping the audience engaged and enthralled.

Mahesh Kale’s concerts are a celebration of Indian music and culture. They testify to his
dedication, talent, and passion for music. Whether you are a seasoned listener or new to Indian
classical music, attending a Mahesh Kale concert is an experience that will leave you enriched and
inspired. His ability to blend tradition with innovation and his engaging stage presence make his concerts special.
