Kiwi-Indians Save The Day At Flaxmere

After more than a year without a local grocery store, Flaxmere residents finally welcomed the opening of a new supermarket which opened on 12 April, 2025.
Located in the former New World premises at the Flaxmere Village Shopping Centre, the store opened with a blessing ceremony at 7am, followed by promotional deals and giveaways. Operated by Anugrah Ltd, the new business is jointly owned by Nirav Patel, Rakeshbhai Patel, and Kavan Prabodhchandra Sonara.
Speaking to Hawke’s Bay Today, Nirav Patel said the aim was to offer affordable pricing across all categories—from fresh produce to frozen goods—and to prioritise quality service for the community. He added that the team was keen to build lasting connections with residents while fulfilling a long-standing need.
The supermarket also includes a limited selection of alcoholic beverages. Patel explained that the goal was to replicate the feel of a complete supermarket, not to become a large liquor outlet.
The closure of the previous New World store in February 2024 had left the suburb of more than 13,000 people without a dedicated supermarket for over a year. The new store fills that gap, offering a locally owned alternative for residents who have had to travel out of Flaxmere for their groceries.
Patel told the publication that the team is currently working with a local butcher to stock the meat section and is exploring additional partnerships with local food producers. However, he noted that securing consistent and sustainable supply remains a challenge.
The store has opened with four checkouts and an initial staff of seven local employees, with plans to expand the team as foot traffic grows. Patel said community feedback has already been overwhelmingly positive, with several locals even offering to volunteer their time to help the store get off the ground.
Flaxmere residents also expressed their enthusiasm on social media, with many welcoming the convenience of a neighbourhood supermarket. Some residents said the opening would save them fuel costs and make grocery shopping easier.
While a Woolworths supermarket is expected to open in Flaxmere in the future, Patel acknowledged the potential challenges that could bring, particularly around supply chains and pricing. Still, he remained confident that the store would be able to stay competitive by focusing on community loyalty and service.
To celebrate its opening day, the store offered treats like ice cream for children and special prices on selected items.
For now, Flaxmere Supermarket stands as the suburb’s only grocery store, bringing relief and convenience to a community that has long awaited its return.
