Kiwi-Indian author Nameet Patil has introduced his debut novel, Ek Bhutadki. This thriller seamlessly intertwines Hindu mythology with modern science, offering readers an immersive experience that stretches the imagination and explores deep philosophical themes.

Born in the bustling city of Mumbai, India, Nameet’s journey to becoming a writer has been an extraordinary one. He moved to New Zealand as a student, and what began as an educational adventure has now evolved into a passionate career as an author and educationist. His unique perspective as a Kiwi-Indian has shaped his storytelling, blending rich cultural heritage with his understanding of contemporary science.

Nameet describes his novel as a “larger-than-life, fast-paced fictional story” that challenges readers’ perceptions of reality. Ek Bhutadki follows a doctor’s intense struggle to save his family while encountering supernatural beings, such as a ghoul, a Tantric, and a witch. Set in Akkalkot, Maharashtra, the novel’s compelling narrative merges horror, sci-fi, and action, with a backdrop of gothic battles and dark web crimes.

He reflects on the response to his book from New Zealand audiences: “The response has been truly humbling, which was unexpected since there was no promotion or marketing yet.” Readers didn’t just connect with the story; they engaged with it on a deeper level, analysing the scientific aspects and connecting them with Hindu mythology. “Some described it as a nail-biting experience, while others found it hard to uncover the secrets right up to the last chapter,” he says. The overwhelming feedback encouraged him to embark on an audiobook version of Ek Bhutadki and even explore the possibility of adapting the story for the big screen.

The inspiration for the novel came from a deeply spiritual source. The vivid dreams and visions he experienced over the course of three nights transformed into the gripping narrative of Ek Bhutadki

His storytelling also draws heavily from his childhood experiences. The influence of his grandmother’s storytelling style played a key role in shaping his writing approach—simple, eloquent, and fast-paced. “Childhood memories of my granny also played a key role in shaping how I wrote it,” he says.

While Ek Bhutadki marks Nameet’s debut as a published author, it’s not his first venture into the world of writing. He has already written two other novels, set to be released in 2025. But Ek Bhutadki holds a special place in his heart.

His exploration of Hindu mythology through the lens of modern science is what sets Ek Bhutadki apart from other books in the genre. “It will empower the audience to make that judgment for themselves,” he says, adding that the book doesn’t fit neatly into a single genre. It’s a unique blend of horror, sci-fi, thriller, and action—one that challenges readers to reflect on their understanding of reality.

When asked about his favorite author, Nameet reflects on the ancient epics that have profoundly shaped his worldview. “Ved Vyasa’s Mahabharata and Sage Valmiki’s Ramayana stand in a completely different league,” he says. These timeless works have influenced his narrative style, particularly his desire to blend mythology with real-world elements.

As for life in New Zealand, the author feels deeply connected to Aotearoa, which he now calls home. “My life has been completely transformed,” he says. Professionally, he is an educationist, passionate about transforming lives and contributing to New Zealand's multicultural fabric.

The journey of writing Ek Bhutadki is just the beginning for Nameet Patil. With plans for future releases and potential film adaptations, his vision for storytelling is as vast and uncharted as the realms he explores in his writing. “It’s an exhilarating experience,” he says, reflecting on the journey ahead.
