At just 19 years old, Sahil Jha from Kolkata, India, is cycling his way across the world with a mission that spans continents and cultures—raising awareness about the global crisis of soil degradation.

Coming to New Zealand on 11 April 2025, he hopes to gain insights into regenerative agriculture practices, indigenous land management techniques, and successful policy measures.

“New Zealand has a rich history of environmental consciousness, and I’m eager to learn from the local experts and incorporate their knowledge into my campaign,” he explains.

His passion for soil conservation began in 2022 when he first encountered the Save Soil movement, an initiative by Sadhguru, that seeks to combat soil erosion, restore soil fertility, and address the pressing issues of food security, climate change, and biodiversity loss.

"I realised that the degradation of soil isn't just an environmental issue—it’s a crisis that affects everything from food security to climate change. I had to act," Sahil reflects.

"Soil is the most underappreciated resource on the planet, and we need to start taking care of it before it’s too late."

Sahil’s journey is nothing short of extraordinary.

Three years ago, at the age of 16, he embarked on his first major cycling campaign, covering 15,000 kilometres across India. He cycled through 15 states, engaging with over 250 institutions, meeting with politicians, influencers, and media outlets to raise awareness about the importance of soil health. The challenges were immense, from battling extreme weather conditions to dealing with exhaustion and logistical issues. But Sahil’s determination carried him through.

Now, he’s setting his sights on an even bigger goal. On 21 March 2025, Sahil launched a solo cycling expedition from Bundaberg, Australia, beginning his ambitious 20,000 km journey across 20 countries over the next 15 months. The route will take him through Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the UK, 12 European countries, and the United States.

Along the way, Sahil plans to speak at schools and universities, collaborate with environmental groups, meet policymakers, and learn from soil experts to promote regenerative agricultural practices. He also intends to harness the power of social media, including his Instagram account, which has already garnered more than 500k views in the first 13 days of the journey.

“My mission is to champion soil health and engage with as many people as possible,” Sahil shares.

“Soil is the foundation of life—without it, we wouldn’t have food, water, or biodiversity. It’s the most crucial resource we have, and it’s rapidly degrading. That’s why I’m taking action, and I want others to join me.”

Sahil’s commitment to soil conservation is rooted in his belief that every individual can contribute to the cause. From reducing chemical use in gardening and farming to composting organic waste and supporting sustainable farmers, Sahil encourages people worldwide to take simple, actionable steps in their daily lives. “We all have a responsibility to protect our planet, and soil health is where we must start,” he says.

His journey isn’t just about cycling; it’s about personal growth and learning from the global community.

As Sahil rides through different countries, he remains deeply motivated by the cause itself. Despite the physical challenges of his journey, including the exhaustion and hardships of long days on the road, the support he receives keeps him going.

“The positive responses from people in Australia have been incredible, and that gives me so much energy to keep moving forward. Knowing that my efforts are contributing to a healthier planet makes all the difference.”

Managing his studies while on the road is another challenge Sahil has overcome. He continues his education online through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) and balances his coursework with his cycling schedule.

“Time management is crucial,” he says. “I dedicate specific hours to study and make the most of online resources.”

Sahil’s story is a powerful reminder of how a single individual’s determination can spark global change. His journey is not just a physical challenge but a call to action for people worldwide to recognise the urgency of soil conservation. Whether through social media, community events, or direct engagement, Sahil is proving that one person—no matter how young—can make a monumental impact.
